Tough Guy ?

I got roped into something at work that I really wasn’t keen on doing.  One of the guys I work with organised a team entry for the "Tough Guy Challenge". I’ve never really been competitive, except maybe with myself in reaching personal goals. The line I got was, "Andy we’ve got seven but need an extra man for a team of eight".  …and so I succumbed to peer pressure.

That was sometime late last year. September I think. I’ve been training on and off ever since. Not too hard, but just enough to keep some personal pride and not let the team down.

Last Sunday was the big day. Judgement day so to speak…  around 4000 slightly deranged people, myself included, gathered in a farm yard near to Pattingham to the West of Wolverhampton.  The objective; a gruelling cross country run of around 7 miles followed by the mother of all assault courses that would take just as long for us to complete.  There were climbs up cargo nets, sliding across high wires, crawling through concrete tunnels, a jump over a fire pit and, most feared, total submersion in a freezing pool…  You can see some BBC video.

Anyway; I did it, and sadistic as it sounds I really, really did enjoy the day. The camaraderie amongst the competitors was just fantastic. My finishing time wasn’t too bad either; seeing as it was a good 10/15 minutes before I even got over the starting line and had to work my way up through the pack. I was quite pleased, not so happy my result is listed in the veterans’ category though…

A few pics follow of me being down right dirty…
