Vernal Equinox

….if in doubt, blind ’em with science…. The vernal equinox took place yesterday at 18:19 GMT.  This is the time at which the Sun, in it’s apparent path through the constellations, moves from the Southern hemisphere to the Northern. In more practical terms it means that the length of night and day are equal.  …and in common terms it means it’s the first day of Spring ! Yipppeee !!!  You wouldn’t have guessed it would you? it’s nad (*) freezing weather outside. It feels as cold here in the UK as it did last week during my trip to Norway.

"How was your trip to Norway/", I hear you ask.  ….Nice of you to mention it.   It was ace ! even if beer was £4/pint during happy hour.  We met a group of Liverpudlians at John Lennon Airport grabbing the cheap Ryan Air flight to Oslo.  I’m not sure they believed us when we told them what to expect in the way of beer prices.  I guess they had a bit of a shock.

Anyway, we were there to climb hard ice.  I can drink cheap beer at home thankyou very much. The climbing was good, though it was -13°C at the start of the week and the ice was very brittle.  I was expecting crowds of climbers there, with the new guide book out, but it was great. We had the place to ourselves and saw only about 3 other teams all week. Clear blue skies a lot of the time too.

I couldn’t ask for more from a trip like this. Phil was there with his "Gordon Blue"  cooking, which was much appreciated especially by someone like me who loves what eventually ends up in his stomach.  The accommodation was good and the company superb. It’s just a shame that now, 3 days since getting back, I feel like I’m well and truely back in the rat race.

Anyway, the first day of Spring !  I love this time of year. Everything is about to kick off, longer days, warm Sun, more adventures…. yeahhh bring it on.
