Well we did it ! Summited on Mont Blanc last Thursday, 1st September. Phil, Paul, Nigel and myself had the summit to our selves at about 10am CET for an hour or so. We made the round trip from the Tete Rouse hut, unguided, in about 14 hours in perfect conditions with lots of stops for photos on the way.
Working at altitude was hard and we all felt pretty drained by the time we got back, even after 6 months of training. It’s going to be ard to have another trip to beat that one. After so much uncertainty and self doubt beforehand we had a week of near perfect weather and the acclimatisation plan worked well, which saw us go from sea level to 4810 meters in 6 days.
So that’s one of life’s objectives ticked, which sounds a little demeaning I know. The experience of Western Europes highest peak was superb, but we all feel a little flat and empty at the moment now that that target has been achieved.
Another objective is required, another adventure, another goal…. I wonder what it will be ?
For the moment it’ll be some open canoeing with the family next month. Long term ? Well Summer’s starting to draw to a close and thoughts will enivatably turn to the winter climbing scene…. I hear Scotland calling….
